Beautiful Himalayas

The Himalayas - where earth meets sky
Nepal Himalayas

General info
Containing nine of the world's fourteen highest mountain peaks, Nepal is a true Himalayan kingdom. The Himalayas cover three fourths of the land in Nepal. It is home to some of the highest, remotest, most rugged and most difficult terrain in the world. The loftiest peak in the world -- Mount Everest -- and other high peaks like Lhotse, Nuptse, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Manaslu, plus the presence of some exquisitely beautiful trekking routes, attract hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world to this lovely Himalayan destination.

The country of Nepal can be divided into three parallel bands running from the northeast towards the southwest. Along the north of Nepal runs the Great Himalayan Range, the highest mountain range in the Himalayan system. This range has an average altitude of about 4,570 m (about 15,000 ft) and remains perpetually snow-covered. On this range rise some of the loftiest mountain peaks in the world -- Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and Annapurna.
Further south runs a complex system of intermediate ranges at an altitude of 8,000-14,000 ft. Prominent ranges in this mountain system include the Mahabharat and Churia ranges. High mountain ranges are interspersed with broad inhabited river valleys. The third and southernmost region is the Terai, a swampy terrain which is the northern extension of the Indian plains.

Smoking increases heart risk more in women than men

Heart shaped ash tray
Women who start smoking increase their risk of a heart attack by more than men who take up the habit, according to a review of more than 30 years of research.
A study of 2.4 million people, published in the Lancet, showed a 25% difference in increased risk.
The reasons are unclear, say researchers.
The British Heart Foundation said the findings were "alarming" especially as women tended to smoke fewer cigarettes.
The World Health Organization lists heart disease as the world's biggest killer, affecting more than seven million people each year.
The illness is largely down to lifestyle choice and smoking is one of the main causes. A study by the University of Minnesota showed women are at greater risk from smoking than men.
It analysed 75 sets of data produced by studies between 1966 and 2010.
The report showed that: "Women had a significant 25% increased risk for coronary heart disease conferred by cigarette smoking compared with men."

Smoking cessation policies and practice should take account of differences between the genders in order to optimise effectiveness in targeting both men and women”
Jules PayneHeart UK
Smoking was thought to double the risk of a heart attack for both men and women. The report's author Rachel Huxley said the risks adjusted for each sex were not available - but she roughly estimated them to be around a 1.8 fold increase if men start smoking and around a 2.3 fold increase for women.
Reason unknown
The researchers admit that the explanation for the increased risk is "unclear", but likely explanations fall into two categories.
Biological differences between the sexes could mean women are more vulnerable to coronary heart disease or there could be differences in the way women smoke.
The authors suggested: "Women might extract a greater quantity of carcinogens and other toxic agents from the same number of cigarettes than men."
Ellen Mason, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: "It's alarming to see such a large study confirm that women are so much more at risk of heart disease from smoking than men.
"Despite women generally smoking fewer cigarettes a day than men, women appear to be substantially more at risk of getting heart disease.
The chief executive of Heart UK, Jules Payne, said: "Smoking cessation policies and practice should take account of differences between the genders in order to optimise effectiveness in targeting both men and women."
Jane Landon, deputy chief executive of the National Heart Forum, said: "In many countries around the world, women are viewed as a growth market by tobacco companies.
"Government plans for plain packaging of tobacco products are urgently needed to stop the cynical marketing that particularly targets young women with slim cigarettes in small, attractive packs in appealing textures and colours."

Music and Dance

With only a recent invasion of television and the media, Nepal is still a highly communitarian society and dancing and singing is a regular. The Music and Dance of Nepal are influence by the concept of harmony is tribal animism, Buddhism, and Hinduism. In the folklore of Nepal, religious mask-dances with the sound of large barrel drums illustrate the age-old battle between good and evil.

The legends state dances in the Indian subcontinent originated in the abode of Lord Shiva - the Himalayas, and the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. Nepali classical music owes its origin to Rig Veda. Later the metrical chanting of its hymns found its expression in the songs of Sam Veda. Gaine are the itinerant singers of the Nepalese folk tradition, side-by-side with temple songs.

Nepali folk dance has the wonderful themes of love and courtship, everyday life, religious worship, happiness and sadness, and often a lot of good-natured Nepalese Dance and Music Culture is the very pride & soul of a Nation. It is just like a mirror that reflects the beauty, nativity & the life pattern of the village people. Music lies in the vary soul of Nepali culture. It represents the humming of a farmer cultivating his land. There are as many different styles of Nepali music and dance as there are ethnic groups. They have own music and dancing history. Some musical dances are Ghatu, Rodhi, Deuda, Selo, etc. These traditional arts are rarely performed outside Nepal.

The ban on public smoking is not going to be implemented at all. Smokers will easily flout the regulations. The government’s failure to implement the regulations will be seem in no time.
Suresh Khanal, jobholder

Common citizens also have a responsibility for effective implementation of the ban on public smoking and tobacco use. There must be massive awareness campaign to make the smokers aware.
Binita Dahal, student

Now the ban is in place officially. Those caught while smoking in public must be punished. Everybody should cooperate.
Purna Magar, jobholder

The government has made a welcome move, but its implementation will be tough. Unless tobacco companies are scrapped use of tobacco products in public places will not be implemented.
Meetra Tiwari, trader

Let’s hope the ban will be implemented.
Surendra Chaudhary, driver

Introducing laws does not automatically stop smoking and use of other tobacco products in public places. The government should rather ban the production and sale of tobacco products.

Nepali Pop Music at a glance !

Welcome to Nepali Pop Hits, most popular songs from second generation pop singers from 90's. Pop songs in Nepal originated in mid 60s itself with singers like Om Bikram Bista, Harish and even Kumar Basnet. With expection of few notable songs, POP songs (even called western music) couldn't make its presence felt due to heavy dominance of modern songs both by old and new generations of those days.
It wasn't untill early 90's when Crossroad made their debut with Naya Mode, the second generation of Pop music amazingly rose to its pinnacle. With Maya Meri Maya, Sanjay Shrestha and his band brought new wave in the music industry. Following the bagdwon were Sanjeep Pradhan, Bhim Tuladhar, Babin Pradhan, Nepathya, Deepak Bajracharya and many more.
New breed of Rock Bands made their presence felt with introduction 1974 A.D., Mantra, Robin and Revolution, Cobweb, etc. While pop bands like Karma and Uglyz made their way in 2003. Solo 1MB bands are still rocking the charts like Sabin Rai, Adrian, Dipesh Kishore, Sugam Pokhrel, etc.

Interview with Actress Melina Manandhar

mykhabar.com, २०६६ ज्येष्ठ २४, सोमवार
Melina Manandar is the ravishing actor who has brought charm to the Nepalese cinema for more than a decade.
She is still at top and still ready to go long. She is one of the famous and talented actresses in Nepali cinema. Priyasi, Feri Arko Saino , Diajo, Simana and Mamaghar are some of the movies she played and was well received by the crowd. Apart from the movies, she has played in telefilms and few music videos. Her appearance in "Pani Pani bhayo Mann pani" and "Chupa chap" was appreciated by many.

She was born to late Mr. Mann Krishna Manandar and Mrs. Lalita Manandar and her entire childhood passed in Kathmandu. It was her mother who had inspired her to become an actress. She is married now, and still is continuing her career as an actress. She feels she was lucky to have a Mr. Mukesh Dhakal as her husband who connects to her feelings and lets her do at what she is best at.

How did you feel being in front of the camera for the first time for your first movie?
Well, I exactly don’t remember the dialogue but I do remember the scene. I was so excited at that time as it was the first time, I had faced a camera. The scenario was that: my car breaks down and on my way to garage; I come across the hero of that film. I really felt nervous at that time.
Among all your films, which film is close to your heart?
The film that is very close to me is "Priyasi".
Which role in the movie you played satisfied you most?
I was very satisfied with the role in Feri Arko Saino and Diajo.
Why did you take a long break in the career; Is it because you weren’t offered any films?
It’s not that I disappeared, actually at that time, many films weren’t directed like today and I was also busy managing time for my serial ‘Karuna’.
What was the main aim to make the TV serial “Karuna”?
Well, it didn’t happened all of sudden or with an aim. The director of this serial "Mahendra Budhathoki" is a friend of mine, so on request of him I joined him.
Nowadays every heroine is ready to do glamour scenes, what would you like to say about it?
It would be quite wrong to say that actors are interested to play glamorous role; the actor just gets into the character as per the need of the story. If the story demands glamour, then an actor should be ready to give it but personally, I feel some heroine are trying to give more than what's demanded in the movie.
What differences can you find in today's cinema in comparison to past years?
There’s not much difference in the films though some changes can be seen in the technology. The film makers have become more creative than before but there are lots of things that need to be changed for the betterment of Nepali Cinema.
Most of the actress stops their career after their marriage but your case has been contradictory to this, what do have to say about it?
I would like to give the full credit to my family and my dear husband. My father-in-law is so sweet and his philosophy is so inspiring. Actually, sometimes I feel I am more conservative than him. Thus, its due to family, my marriage became strength for my career rather than a weakness.
How do you take politics as?
I know Politics is everyon's cup of tea but don't know why I am not interested in politics. So I don’t have much knowledge regarding it.
Who is your favorite politician and why?
My favorite is Subash Newang as I have heard a lot of good things about him. I think he isn’t corrupt like other.
As an artist how would you define Pokhara as?
I really don't have words to define it. It’s a very beautiful place and I sometimes feel that if there was a heaven then it would be like this.
Would you like to share a few words about your upcoming movie?
Well, I can only give you little detail only. It’s a family drama. In this movie, there is everything included like romance, tragedy and action. In this movie, few conspire to separate me and Nikhil, but at the end its ends happily. For more detail, you need to come to the Cinema theaters and watch the movie.
Let me ask you some personal question, in your view what do you think of "Sex"?
It’s a natural process.

What is love?
It’s just like a deep ocean that you can't measure but feel.
How do you define life as?
Life is a stage where you got to face struggles.
What do you like to do in your leisure time?
Umm…I like to sleep but to my bad luck, I don’t get any leisure.
And lastly what would you like to say to your well-wisher?

I would request them to love Nepali film and Nepali artists.

Nepathya (the famous nepali band)

Amrit Gurung: The Pioneer of Nepathya Band

Nepathaya Band

Nepathya (Nepali:नेपथ्य also spelled - Nepathaya) is a popular Nepalese music band that was formed by 3 students from Pokhara, studying in Kathmandu, Nepal in the early 1990s. Nepathya is best known for its blending of folk melodies into new, youth-friendly pop and rock tune. Since its inception, Nepathya has gained consistent popularity and recognition and is one of the most talented band in Nepal. Nepathya’s songs usually portray contemporary Nepal. The moving force behind this band is Amrit Gurung who wears Gandhian frames ( supposed to have been presented to him from one of his aunts who was a staunch follower of M.K. Gandhi) and sings about peace and harmony. His songs encompass all of Nepal and is not limited to Kathmandu Valley. By hobby he is a photographer and a traveler. He has been to more than 70 of 75 districts of Nepal, most of them on foot. Nepathya has seen many changes in its band's line up. But the founder and the brain behind Nepathya is unfazed. "Being in Nepathya is like being part of a serious journey. Anyone who deviates from team spirit and artistic commitment, find it hard to stay with the team", Gurung says.

He was the sixth child and second son of renowned Sitar player Late Asha Gopal Guruvacharya and Ram Devi Guruvacharya. Pokhreli music

Pokhara has become a music hub as FM stations mushroom, leading to the start of many local recording studios. In the past, artistes had to go to Kathmandu and spend weeks there recording songs. Now, they can record songs right here at a standard that is at par with studios in Kathmandu. Bar Digital Studio, started in 1995, is Pokhara's first recording studio. Says Buddharaj Bajracharya, proprietor, "Now that recording is easy here, we hope to encourage local artistes of all genres—folk, pop, modern and more." With four FM and three cable stations, music has blossomed in Pokhara. Recording studios are sure to grow too.
"Artistes used to go to Kathmandu searching for good musicians. Now, Pokhara has all the talent needed," says Samsung Tamang, music arranger of Bar Digital Studio. He adds, "Bands that used to record there now record here."
Namaste Pokhara Digital Studio, opened last year, is doing pretty good business. TR Kafle, proprietor, says, "With 60 percent of our time spent on folk music, 20 percent on pop and modern, and the remaining on radio programmes, documentaries, radio advertisements and dubbing, the studio runs for almost 13 hours a day." The studio uses hardware and software like Protools 6-1-1 and Digi-002 Rack. Managing director Chhabi Subedi adds, "We want to promote local talents and achieve professional excellence."
Fewa Digital Studio was established in 2000 to promote folk music in Gandaki and Dhaulagiri. Laxman Poudel and Tejendra Gurung, proprietors, say that the studio is always crowded with hopeful artistes. The duo says that after recent revisions in management, they have decided to release albums of various genres.
"Albums recorded in Pokhara are doing well," says Keshab Bastola, coordinator of New Pokhara Audio-Video. Deepak Bhattarai, musician, has also started a music company, Music Vision, to help develop Pokhara as the capital of Nepali music. Technical aspects related to recording are carried out here. Jitesh Pradhan, famed for his docu-song, says he enjoys being a part of this growing industry.
Studios producing and distributing songs and videos, such as Shree Vision, Pokhara Vision, AVCD Pokhara, Music Vision and others are gaining ground. Locally produced songs have become all the rage here in local cable and FM stations. Dev Chhetri of BC Cable says, "Our priority is local music." Other stations agree as much. As Dipendra Shrestha, station manager for Radio Annapurna, says, "We must support them."
